Installing disc brakes on a bike that didn't come with disc brakes- Mtbr. Originally Posted by djork.
Hello, all. Here's the nitty- gritty. I have a Specialized FSR Enduro dual- suspension bike. The bike originally came with a V- brake set- up.
The tail part of the bike is not set up for disc brakes at all. Having said that, is there any hope of having disc brakes on my bike? I know there are adaptors to mount the caliper, but with the amount of force involved in braking, this doesn't sound practical. What about welding a fixed mount for the caliper?
Then there is the replacement of the whole tail section part with one that has a caliper mount. But I think this is a bit too expensive. What are my options short of buy a new bike with disc brakes? Reason for disc brakes: Safety. I've ridden in the rain, and the V- brakes were iffy. And they look cool!
Hey fellow FSR owners - - here's what I did to my FSR. I basically have the same bike as you do - - same frame anyhow.
I added a mechanical disk to the front - - my origional bike setup had a SID with 8. I found that to be too little.
I upgraded the front end to a Psylo XC that had a disk mount. Initially I had a 1.
I weigh about 2. 10lbs and found that in the wet, the 1. I'd be out of control on the downhills.
The 2. 03mm is the way to go as the front brake can stop the bike clean on it's own. On the rear, I had a couple of issues.
First, no frame mounts for a rear caliper. I too looked at all of the options.
The Specialized "Shark Fin" was the adapter the manufacturer made to add disks to this bike in the beginning and it's now almost impossible to find. Brake Therapy makes a similar fitting adapter, but it's very expensive. In the end, I purchased and have installed the A2.
Z adapter. It holds on very tight, and IMHO works the same as welding the adapters to the frame. Anyhow, installs in a snap and doesn't cause any issues for riding or braking. The rear wheel is harder to get off - - you have to completely remove the skewer and give a good pull on the wheel to get it out.
No big deal. I had replaced my rear wheel last year and unfortunately, didn't have the foresight to get one with a disk hub. I ended up installing a hub adapter for a non- disk rear wheel from a company called First Principles. It installs over the existing hub and bolts into 1. You then replace the spokes on the non- drive side with new spokes that are 4mm shorter. This was my first wheel rebuild and at the end of the day, it was very easy. Took about 1 hour to remove the old spokes, add the adapter and re- thread the new spokes. On the rear, I only added a 1.
V- Brakes. A couple of tricks for those who care. Mechanical brakes, like V- Brakes tend to get sticky after time. Instead of running the brake cable through the guides, I have decided to run a solid Teflon cable to both brakes and have found the braking is much smoother and stronger. In fact, I do the same thing with the rear shifter cable - - it is very easy to drill out the cable guides and run a solid cable to the derailleur for way smoother shifting.
I cheaped out on brake calipers. Both front and rear I run Tektro IO Mechanicals. In principle these things work the same way as other mechanicals. They are extremely easy to install. I have had over 1.
I have been hammering my FSR hard. Summary of the costs: A2. Z adapter: $3. 0First principles adapter: $3. Tektro Caliper: $2. New cables: $1. 5.
